Pet Food Ingredients -S- Sweeteners

S

Sweeteners

For that kitty with a sweet tooth...

Except Fluffy aint got a sweet tooth.

Meat tooth yes..sweet tooth no.

Kitty - minus the sweet tooth
A study was done on 6 cats - they sequenced their DNA and located the sweetness receptors.

They are comprised of two proteins - Tas1r2 and Tas1r3

Tas1r3 is a match - but Tas1r2 is missing 247 base pairs of the amino acids that make up the gene - so it is actually a pseudogene  - not coded properly to 'read' sweets.

I guess an easy way to think of it is - they are not wired to taste sweet.

What do they taste?

I do not know -  but I suspect it would be similar to eating a sponge? or maybe a plain rice cake.?
Wait those are basically the same thing.

So if Fluffy can't taste sweet... can she digest it?

Good question!
I don't have an answer yet..but I am working on it.

I have found out that cats seem to lack Glucokinase. - kinda - It's all science.

Glucokinase -is a gene which plays a role in recognizing how high blood glucose is in the body.
It's a “glucose sensor” for the pancreas.  When the blood glucose rises, the amount of insulin produced also increases.

Here is a bit of info on that
Cats seem to have an issue in regards to parts if their body recognizing how to metabolize the sugars in carbohydrates.

Some believe todays high carbohydrate diets are the cause of the high rate of feline obesity and diabetes.
Here is a bit of info on Glucokinase and Diabetes

And back to sweeteners.

Ammoniated Glycyrrhizin - made from the water extract of licorice root by what sounds like a sulfuric acid bath -  followed by neutralization with dilute ammonia.

Aspartame - an artificial  - non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute.

Beet Pulp - or Beet Molasses is the by product of removing the sugar from Sugar Beets - oddly not a lot of sugar in this

Cane Molasses - extracted from the sugar cane during the production of refined sugar.

Caramel - possibly the same stuff that is in coke and pepsi

Corn Syrup - made from the starch of corn - or maize if you are sick of seeing the word 'corn'

Fructose - also known as fruit sugar. It is a simple sugar - monosaccharide.

Glycerin - a sugar alcohol - a thick sweet liquid - used in soap - add nitro in front and you got dynamite!

Hydrogenated Starch Hydrolysate- a mixture of several sugar alcohols.

Neohesperidin Dihydrochalcone -NHDC- an artificial sweetener derived from citrus.

Polydextrose -  a water-soluble polymer of glucose that provides to foods the bulk and texture of sugar.

Propylene Glycol- clear odorless liquid with the consistency of syrup. Interesting other uses.

Saccharine - 300 times sweeter than sugar - absolutely no food energy
(calorie free )

Sorbitol - can be made from corn syrup - a sweetener that can also be used as a laxative..interesting.

Sucrose  - Sugar
Sugar Cane - ahh honey honey
Sugar - You are my candy girl

There are probably more - they are probably creating one right now.

mousie tooth

flipflop tooth
cheesy noodle tooth
what ever your eating - tooth
