Pet Food Ingredients - M revisited - MSG

M

MSG

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified MSG as a food ingredient that's "generally recognized as safe," the use of MSG remains controversial. For this reason, when MSG is added to food, the FDA requires that it be listed on the label.(Mayo Clinic)

Sounds simple enough right?
See MSG and then you know.
Except NO
Below is a list of what I have been able to collect of MSG in other formats - names

*This may not a be complete list

MSG is a tiny little Sweat Shop owner - putting things to work that should not be working.
  •  Free glutamic acid is detected by the taste buds as a simple way to signal the presence of protein in a food, just as there are fat receptors to detect fats and receptors that sense carbohydrate or sweet flavors.
  • The purpose is to help us discern real food from inedible matter.
One of our senses is -Taste

Taste includes - Salty, Sweet, Bitter, & Sour
And..yes there is an and!

Umami

Sounds like some weird ass Japanese Fung Shui or Fighting style doesn't it?

Umami is associated with the Savory taste which is created by Glutamate ( Glutamate  is naturally occurring in our bodies -Glutamic Acid)

MSG triggers this taste  - which in turn triggers different actions in our bodies.
Insulin Production
Excess Insulin lowers blood glucose - Hypoglycemia

It has been found that the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus could be affected, resulting in brain lesions that resulted in obesity and neuroendocrine disorders

Okay, so what does it do to Fluffy and Fido?

MSG can:

  • Affect the Thyroid
  • Cause Obesity
  • Create Taurine deficiencies
  • Damage brain cells
  • Stimulate or damage the Nervous System
It is also addictive - because getting Fluffy to stop eating Fancy Frisky Mix wasn't hard enough

Glutamate - Glutamic Acid - is an naturally occurring non-essential amino acid

I basically just said it is a naturally occurring, naturally occurring amino acid

We do not need it - we can make it ourselves.

Our pets do not need it - they can make it themselves.

When we consume MSG, we are adding on top of what is already there - creating excess Glutamate.

Everyone responds to this differently.
Some will not even notice any response.
Others are sensitive to MSG.

People may experience:
  • Chest pain
  • Facial pressure or tightness
  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas
  • Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
  • Sweating
  • Weakness
Anyone else thinking about a commercial about a new prescription medication?

According to animal research (btw it sucks to read about this)

Everything seems all well and good - until you get down to Development & Reproduction , Neurotoxicity
& other named toxicities.

Just like Humans.

It seems as though, to avoid MSG - one would have to make their own food - and basically grow it themselves.

It would be very hard to eliminate all MSG - But you can do your best to limit you and your pets intake.

*Some of the names I tend to see on pet foods ( in regards to MSG)
  • Hydrolyzed - anything
  • Natural Flavoring
  • ____Protein ( soy, pea, etc)
Humans and Animals are NOT Allergic to MSG
It is a Sensitivity - apparently that is different, only thing I can think is that it will not show up on a test, and we can't treat it with Benadril.
We really can't treat it at all - Though it is said that a Vitamin B supplement may make us less sensitive.

Insensitive jerk!...no it does not make a person insensitive
Same as always - educated yourself - read the ingredients.

The cats would like to hear from the humans.
