What I am reading in regards to Diabetic cats -
Feline Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus

Your Diabetic Cat

Feline Outreach

Low Carb diet - sorry did they say low?
Are they saying that some times high carb diets are to blame ?

Yes and yes.

Could a Lean meat protein - grain free canned food be idea?

It is also stated to avoid a lot of vegetables and fruit due to their sugar and carb content.

Okay - so high protein, low carb, low sugar, high quality! Lets look.

Here is a list of the calorie content in a bunch of canned cat foods - but I do not find that helpful - saw dust is low in calories - so is corn.

Blue Wilderness Rocky Mountain  - Grain Free

Boreal - Canadian company - they seem to care about the glycemic index - good start!

GRI - Glycemic Research Institute - they list a few Merrick Cans

Wild Calling

All of the other points can generally be met if you seek out a food that is diabetic friendly.

Diabetic Friendly - in the case of cats - can actually be fantastic for general health of non diabetic cats.

I'm sorry that just wont work, we must create different foods for different cats. Then we have to make another line for Black cats, one for Orange cats and for sure we need to make one for cats with fluffy tails!

It is important to state that when changing your pet from a carb loaded dry diet - to a protein rich wet diet / or Raw diet - you should consult your veterinarian. It has got to be a shock to their system - don't freak out Fluffy - change is scary.

A WET FOOD DIET OR RAW FOOD DIET IS BEST.

Sorry Dry food but you gotta take a hike. No energy? Maybe your company should lay off the carbs.

x/d- Oxidate Related Flutd - Apparently only exists here

That's okay - I really wanted to say Xylophone Diet

Cuz why not?

How it is stated to help -

Clinically proven nutrition to restore thyroid health
Improves thyroid health in 3 weeks* (when fed as the sole source of nutrition)
Complete daily nutrition with a taste your cat will love

They didn't even make bullets this time - maybe they were getting bored after creating so many others in their alphabetical nightmare.

Clinically proven to restore Thyroid health in 3 weeks!

That is the same link as the one attached to the name - but just in case you missed that statement.
That is pretty impressive.
How?

Simple - just read this 28 page pdf

Well Mr. Smith- they lowered the iodine levels in Fluffys food.

Okay so what is high in iodine?

Start at page 12 of this PDF

It's a cookbook for humans dealing with Thyroid Cancer

 Avoid

Iodized Salt
Seaweed -  Carrageenan, Agar Agar, Algin, Alginate, Nori
Kelp
Soy - other than soy oil or soy lecithin
Oats
Lentils
Corn
Tomatoes
Peas
Spinach
Beans

That is just a tiny list of what is possible a rather large list of foods to avoid.

Okay, so how does the y/d diet work if Corn is the first ingredient, and third..and Soy is 4th?

Magic again?

The magical ability to make a cat food with no meat !

I was on the Little Big Cat website and I came across this -

"Several studies found an increased likelihood of developing thyroid disease in cats who eat a lot of canned food. Specifically, they found a higher incidence of hyperthyroidism in cats that ate fish or “giblet” canned foods. “Giblet” is another name for organ meats, which are commonly listed on pet food labels as “by-products.” High-quality natural cat foods do not contain by-products, although some include specific organ meats, such as liver. Just what it is in these foods that is the culprit is unknown, although some suggest it may be BPA in the can, or fire retardants in the ingredients" (see below). Actually see website - I didn't want to post the whole thing

So canned food eh, or is it the cans themselves?
Evil cans.
Apparently the big cans are evil, but the small cans are okay?
No small cans are evil, but the big ones are also evil?
Holy crap - why don't they just use something else? Is that even possible?

Flame Retardants linked to Thyroid problems in cats?
Are they trying to make our cats food flame retardant ?

Apparently Fluffy consumes Fire Retardant Chemicals while she grooms herself  - it is in the air from our furniture and carpets and other fantastic chemically treated items.

As for the pet food - I am still looking - but so far it may be best to steer clear of Fish flavored canned foods.

This is not for certain - but since it is absolutely possible to avoid - why not.

So what the hell do I feed Fluffy????

I DON'T KNOW!
How about a biological appropriate diet?
High in good meat protein?
Good fats?
No grains?
The tricky part will be trying to find a food that does not have any seaweed type things in it.
Soy will also be hard to avoid.
And Peas.
By the way - those three things sound rather odd to be in cat food.
I would write the company - ask for their iodine amounts
You could write some of the higher quality food brands

I leave it in your hands - actually Fluffy and Fido do.

z/d- Low Sensitivity

Ingredients -

Brewers Rice, Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver, Hydrolyzed Chicken, Soybean Oil, Powdered Cellulose, Lactic Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Sulfate, Glyceryl Monostearate, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Choline Chloride, vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Niacin Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement , Folic Acid), Taurine, Iodized Salt, Dicalcium Phosphate, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Mixed Tocopherols for freshness, Beta-Carotene, Natural Flavors.

How it is stated to help -
  • Formulated with Hill's Hydrolyzed Protein System, highly digestible proteins that minimize the chances of adverse reactions to food
  • A single, highly digestible carbohydrate source to help avoid adverse reactions to food
  • Highly digestible carbohydrates and fats to help reduce gastrointestinal workload
  • Increased omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acids to help nourish the skin
  • Added antioxidants to help maintain a healthy immune system and skin barrier function
Didn't we cover Allergies already?
Yes..yes we did.

But this one has Hydrolyzed Protein!

Wtf is that?

Hydrolyzed proteins are created by breaking food down into amino acids. Generally by boiling the food in hydrochloric acid and then neutralizing the solution with sodium hydroxide

Who thinks of these things?

Lets just toss this here chicken into a vat of acid - make sure you are wearing your protective gear - its corrosive !
There - now lets just give it a nice Lye bath.
Anyone hungry?

No thank you.
Nope.
Not feeding Fluffy your possibly toxic sludge.

So why are people using hyrdolyzed protein diets?

Nope, still nope.

Why not try one of the Limited Ingredient Diets?
If Fluffy reacts - then you are down to a rather small list of possible suspects.

If not - try another

Ask your vet how to do your own feeding trials.

By the way - if your cat does well on one of the LID diets - stop!
If you are feeding a good food - like Instinct LID - you are good to go!

Why go on a fishing expedition when you have already found a food that works?

You may really want to know - But Fluffy don't wanna play along with the elimination game.

**********

Am I done? I am done!

I dislike these foods more than ever now.
The company to me is - Well lets just say I highly dislike it, and leave it at that.

We are their guardians - their guides.

They trust we will keep them safe - as many of our pets try to do for us.

Food is not a luxury - it is a necessity and they deserve a biologically appropriate diet.
